Among these was Rock of Ages, receiving a total of seven nominations, and A Chorus Line scoring six nods, both of which are up for Best Musical.

The Importance of Being Earnest earned four nominations, and will be up against Griffin Theatre and Sydney Festival’s The Boys in the Best Play category.

Opera Australia came away with the most nominations for any company with twelve nominations, while Melbourne Theatre Company came in with ten.

The annual Helpmann Awards recognise “distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia’s vibrant live performance sectors, including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, opera, classical music, theatre, dance and physical theatre.”
