It’s been a two year wait, but it will be worth it. Underbelly Arts 2013 is set to see over 100 artists take up residence on the iconic and historic Cockatoo Island this July and August.
Since its inception in 2007 Underbelly Arts has aimed to expose Sydney’s creative underbelly, giving a platform to the incredible artists who previously were confined to working from their homes and warehouses.
This year the festival will be divided into two parts. The second part – the Festival weekend – has for the first time expanded to an action-packed two days. The weekend is set to be filled with a riot of art, colour, performances, interactive activities, industry talks and all-round adventure. Whether you want to join in a workshop with an Archibald Prize finalist, witness free-falling in a mesmerising video installation or attach yourself to a 3D printer that aims to print out your thoughts – there’s going to be something there for everyone. You can check out the full program here.
The magic of Underbelly Arts starts long before the weekend however, with the public invited along to the first part – The Lab – from July 24-31. The Lab aims to lift the curtain on the creative process, inviting you behind the scenes where you can see the artists developing and testing the work that will ultimately become a part of the Festival weekend itself. The Lab is free, with tours starting daily at 3pm from today. Don’t miss this authentic insight into the artists’ hidden world.
Tickets for the Festival Weekend taking place across August 3 and 4 are on sale here now.
