They’ve taken on crime.
Now they’ll take on their most daunting challenge yet.
This June, STUDIO takes you behind the curtain as a group of hardened ex-crims reinvent themselves as actors on the stage, performing a play by one of Australia’s award winning playwrights. From rehearsals to the final performance, there will be no escaping the drama as they begin the next chapter of their new lives.
But first, we’ll tell you everything you need to know before you tune in…
WHAT IS THE CHOCOLATE FROG?
The Chocolate Frog is a play written by playwright Jim McNeil. McNeil was one of Australia’s most violent criminals in the 1960s and whilst serving 17 years in Parramatta Correctional Centre, this unlikely playwright became a celebrity for writing plays from his gaol cell, having never stepped foot inside a theatre.
MEET THE CAST
Grant Thompson: The mentor to the group of ex-crims, Grant’s experience includes acting with the prestigious Shakespeare and Co in the US before moving to the other side of the camera working as an agent and re-training former prisoners for the film and TV industry.
Peter Sammak: As a young man, Peter was a regular on Sydney’s Kings Cross scene and saw all the dramas that the world has to deliver. After escaping that life, Peter has appeared as an actor in the TV series Rake.
Amy Squire: After falling in with the wrong crowd, Amy has been in and out of prison and involved with drugs from a young age. She credits her enthusiasm for acting with helping her stay on track.
